Sustainable development The concept of sustainable development was popularized by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in its “World Conservation Strategy,” and was refined in 1987 in the Brundtland Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development: Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future g [...] The major reason for the absence of work in this area relates to the difficulty of assessing the exact nature of the linkages. [...] For the publication detailing the energy sector research, Anton Eberhard from the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business was responsible for the section outlining the economic and regulatory characteristics of the energy industry, as well as the sections on energy services reform and the social equity aspects of energy provision. [...] The paper provides a broad outline of the contribution of tourism to growth and the economy, with specific attention to the regulatory environment in which the sector operates. [...] The trail, use of the land and the funds generated are all the property and responsibility of the Amadiba Community, which is represented by ACCODA (hence the selection of this site by the authors as a community-owned initiative).
