Canada's beef food system

15 Jan 2013

During the winter of 2012, the authors received feedback from industry associations representing the cattle sector at both the provincial and national levels, representatives of the meat packing segment of the sector, representatives of food retailing and the food service sector, governments, and from the diverse membership of the Beef Value Chain Roundtable. [...] This is the basis for strategically responding to the challenges and to help position the industry to achieve a sustainable and prosperous future. [...] If the right people are at the table, and the right approach is taken, the Roadmap can generate ideas that help address the challenges and capitalize on the opportunities. [...] Thanks to the resilience of the beef stakeholders and the determination of governments to support the sector over that time, the industry is now positioned to consider ways to improve its prosperity. [...] Fully addressing all the reasons for and implications of these issues would require an analysis beyond the scope of this report, which is focused on the views of Canadian beef stakeholders and the implications of those views for the sector’s potential.
