Natural gas-fired generation in the integrated power system plan

24 Jun 2008

The Integrated Power System Plan (IPSP) includes a significant increase in natural gasfired power generation capacity. This has raised questions about the ability of the natural gas market to supply the natural gas that will be needed, and the effects that additional gas-fired generation might have on other natural gas consumers in the province. This report is organized in three sections: Section I describes the natural gas delivery system that supplies Ontario, and its relationship to the larger North American market. Section II describes the expected growth in natural gas use and the gas infrastructure required for electricity generation, based on information used in the IPSP. Section III addresses the implications of additional gas use for electricity generation for other Ontario natural gas users.
