88 1 ABOUT THE AFMC Founded in 1943, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) represents Canada's 17 faculties of medicine and is the voice of academic medicine in this country. [...] Since the universities are under provincial jurisdiction, the majority of places in a faculty of medicine are allocated to permanent residents of the province in which the university is located. [...] Unsuccessful applicants should realize that the reason for rejection may not be the lack of ability or qualities but the competition for the limited number of places that are available when the number of qualified applicants greatly exceeds the number of available places. [...] The conditions of admission may require that the faculty of medicine will be compensated for the entire cost of medical education, the student will not apply for post-MD (residency) training in Canada, and/or that these graduates will return to their countries of origin to practise medicine. [...] Upon successful completion of the preparatory year, the student will be admitted to the MDCM program in the Faculty of Medicine.
