V661995 940.54'8243 C95-911162-X The Alberta ALBERTA Foundation Alberta Cotteries for the Arts COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURE AND THE ARTS Financial support provided in part by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Council, and the Baltic Aid Society of British Columbia. [...] The knowledge conventionally circulated in English about the Second World War excludes detailed descriptions of the daily life of those we thought of as the enemy, of women and children in war, and of life in forced labour camps run by the Allies. [...] Quite re- cently, our comfortable view of ourselves and the enemy has been shaken by the knowledge that the prisoners of war taken by the Americans, the French and the British led harsh and deprived lives. [...] To this end, the Afterword asks the reader to consider a kind of stage-craft which transforms the everyday realities of the stories into the abstractions created by other analyses. [...] Focussing on the last year of the Second World War, they were written by a woman and a man, who, in the smoke of conflict and in the endless columns of the moving dispossessed, were seeking each other.
