[...] Askin’s agent to the Indian nations along the far reaches of the Miami River was a tall athletic Scot, John Norton,9 whom young Richardson saw in his grandfather’s store and heard referred to as the man from the territory of West Augusta, shortened to Wagousta.10 The name “Wagousta” and Norton’s adoption of Indian ways and dress were 3 to provide the inspiration for the character of Wacousta in Ri [...] The fort on the west side with the Indian council house near it, the dock and the painted wooden houses of the settlement cut out of the wilderness, and the high bank on the east which curved out toward the island leaving passage for ships coming into harbour, created a memorable scene. [...] Richardson described their departure: It was the depth of winter; and the river at the point we crossed being four miles in breadth, the deep rumbling noise of the guns prolonging their reverberations like the roar of distant thunder as they moved along the ice, mingled with the loud cries of the Indians, seemed to threaten some convulsion of nature; while the appearance of the troops winding alon [...] The pain of being carried the extra distance was preferable to his father’s wrath.20 The second line broke and the Americans were pursued along the ice of the river where, if not captured by the British, they were killed by the Indians.
