The main limitations to the establishment of naturally colonizing beetle species seem to be the strongly seasonal semi-arid climatic conditions of the large, lowland areas of the islands and the prevalence of large areas of young and unweathered lava substrates. [...] The isolation of the islands from the coast of Central and South America is of lesser importance in the accumulation of the fauna, because other islands of comparable age, size and isolation elsewhere in the world, but which are more humid, have more beetle species. [...] This is partly a reflection of the isolation of the islands (800–1000 km west of the coast of Ecuador), their youth (only 3–4 million years (Ma)), the difficulty of dispersing to them, their seasonally harsh and semi-arid tropical climate, and the difficulty of establishment by colonizing species. [...] The present plants and animals can be seen to be a record of the successes in dispersal to the islands, and of the dynam- ics of their subsequent evolution in isolation. [...] It is the goal of this study to present an exploration or reconstruction of the dynamics of dispersal, isolation, differentiation, and bionomics (natural histories) of the beetles of the Galápagos Archipelago and the data upon which they are based.
