I came to teaching to create a climate for others to fall in love with the craft that can give voice to what matters most: to understand, challenge and celebrate what it is to be human. [...] But we have no acknowledged place for the storytellers, in the family or the community, and only an uncertain grasp of the value of the stories themselves. [...] Lucien slept most of the morning, read and wrote most of the night, but he could always be persuaded to tell family stories about his preacher father, who believed in hell but not in heaven and was forced to leave the church, about his saintly mother, the fire that burned down the first farmhouse, taking the life of a serving-girl and her illegitimate child. [...] The choice of point of view should be dictated by the needs of the narrative, not by the assumptions of the audience or the defensiveness of the writer. [...] The ability to create a range of characters is one of the re- quirements for a writer of fiction.
