But the general advances made in the last thirty years in the broader field of Hiberno-Latin studies - arising principally from the pioneerin work of Bernhard Bischoff — have also necessitated a reappraisal of Cummian's Letter as one of the earliest witnesses to the Latin scholarship of the Irish churches. [...] The Letter is dated usually by a combination of internal and external evidence: from the heading of the letter we learn that the addressee is Abbot Segene of lona, who held that office during the years 623-6 5 2.! Bede, in his account of the Irish mission to Northumbria,2 relates how Aidan, bishop of the lona dependency of Lindisfarne during the years 634-651, followed the old Irish custom of calc [...] In support of the choice of 631 as the year of whole-month divergence in Easter dates is the fact that this is also the penultimate year in Mac Carthy's 84-year cycle,14 so that a final decision in the year following (AD 632 = the last year of the 84-year cycle) would have facilitated a changeover in the first year of the new cycle. [...] There can be little doubt that the decision arose out of a comparison of the two cycles for the duration of eighty-four years.15 Likewise, the adoption by the lona community of the "orthodox" Easter reckoning in 715 occurred eighty-four years after its first reception in the southern Irish churches, leading to the events recounted in Cummian's Letter.16 Finally, in favour of 632 as the date for Cu [...] Tipperary).27 The latter connection is streng- thened by the fact that in the Annals of Ulster he is called Do-Becoc Cluana Aird in the notice of his death (AU 690).28 If the genealogy is reliable it would make of Beccan a distant relative of Columba himself and, of course, of Cuimine.
