[...] Using insights from the academic literature and a review of programs and services currently available to 2SLGBTQI+ students, this paper examined the systemic barriers to education faced by 2SLGBTQI+ students and the services provided by provincial and territorial governments to reduce these barriers. [...] 2SLGBTQI+ students contend with victimization in school settings, lack of supportive school personnel, lack of access to positive spaces and services for 2SLGBTQI+ people, curricula that fail to address sexual orientation and gender identity, and practices and policies that do not protect 2SLGBTQI+ students. [...] Inclusive education policy and curricula are critical, but often lacking A curriculum that includes all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions (SOGIE) is central to the educational success of 2SLGBTQI+ students and their mental and emotional wellbeing. [...] Positive spaces and services in and outside of school are also critical Having positive spaces and services available both within schools and in the wider community has been shown to positively impact 2SLGBTQI+ students; conversely, the absence of such inclusive spaces and services can negatively affect students’ educational outcomes.
