1] − 𝜌𝑤 𝜌𝑝 where: 𝜌𝑚 = bulk density of the specimen [g/cm3], 𝑀𝑡 = total mass of the specimen (includes porewater and solids phases) [g], 𝑀𝑐 = wax-coated mass of the specimen [g], 𝑀𝑠𝑢𝑏 = submerged mass of the wax-coated specimen [g], 𝜌𝑤 = density of the water at the test temperature [g/cm3], and 5 January 2020 1671632 (1400A) 𝜌𝜌 = density of the wax [g/cm3]. [...] The submerged mass of the wax-coated specimen (𝑀𝑠𝑢𝑏) was recorded along with the temperature of the water in the container to 0.1 °C. [...] The mass of pulverized oven dried specimen (Ms) was added to the empty pycnometer and then covered with de- aired, distilled water until the water level was between 1/3 and 1/2 of the depth of the main body of the pycnometer. [...] The cause of the increasing trend is unknown, but may be related to a slight movement of the polyethylene disk during handling of the cell and consequently the formation of a migration pathway along the disk / rubber tubing interface. [...] Example, if the collector accounts for 0.2 of the weight of water in a cell, then it is assumed that 20% of the evaporative losses occurred from the collector, and that 80% of the evaporative losses occurred from the source.
