Because of the destructive nature of the UCS and Brazilian tests, there is a possibility that some of the sample material may be lost during testing, which will make it difficult to know the exact volume of the sample after the test. [...] The density of the bulk samples, as received, is calculated as follows: Volume of the prepared sample = 𝑉 Mass of the prepared sample = 𝑀 𝑀 𝜌 = bulk 𝑉 The water content of the sample is calculated as follows: Mass of the sample after testing (initial mass before drying) = 𝑀𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡 Mass of the sample after drying = 𝑀𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑀𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡 − 𝑀𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑤 = 𝑀𝑑𝑟𝑦 Calculation of the sample dry de. [...] Recording of the acoustic emissions did not start at exactly the same time as the recording of the strains; therefore, the two records (strains and AE) were time-matched at the peak stress in order to compare the time (and stress) of the crack initiation process. [...] In the measurement of moisture content, the samples were weighed before testing and placed in the oven after completion of the test to start the drying process. [...] Volumetric strain reversal may or may not correspond to CD in uniaxial conditions depending on the internal damage mechanisms; therefore, it is recommended that the deviation from the linear section of the stress strain curve be determined by plotting the tangent modulus (slope of the stress strain curve) to identify the onset of the deviation.
