Summary

Because of the destructive nature of the UCS and Brazilian tests, there is a possibility that some of the sample material may be lost during testing, which will make it difficult to know the exact volume of the sample after the test. [...] The density of the bulk samples, as received, is calculated as follows: Volume of the prepared sample = 𝑉 Mass of the prepared sample = 𝑀 𝑀 𝜌 = bulk 𝑉 The water content of the sample is calculated as follows: Mass of the sample after testing (initial mass before drying) = 𝑀𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡 Mass of the sample after drying = 𝑀𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑀𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡 − 𝑀𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑤 = 𝑀𝑑𝑟𝑦 Calculation of the sample dry de. [...] Recording of the acoustic emissions did not start at exactly the same time as the recording of the strains; therefore, the two records (strains and AE) were time-matched at the peak stress in order to compare the time (and stress) of the crack initiation process. [...] In the measurement of moisture content, the samples were weighed before testing and placed in the oven after completion of the test to start the drying process.
