----------------------------------------------- Artificial Intelligence and Civil Liability Project Committee The mandate of the Project Committee is to assist BCLI in developing law reform recom- mendations for adaptation of the common law of torts to address harm to persons, property and other legally protected interests resulting from the operation of artificial intelligence systems. [...] Purpose of Consultation Paper The purpose of the consultation paper is to gather the views of stakeholders and the general public on tentative law reform recommendations developed by the Project Committee. [...] The outward opacity of the systems, together with the tendency of the software in- dustry to treat algorithms and other aspects of the design of systems as proprietary secrets, has emerged as a problem in civil litigation. [...] The objectives of the project are: • to identify how the common law rules of tort need to be adapted to provide just and adequate civil remedies for harm to persons, property, and other legal inter- ests resulting from the operation of autonomously functioning artificial intelli- gence; and • to develop and publish recommendations to adapt the law of tort to address that context. [...] 2 British Columbia Law Institute Consultation Paper on Artificial Intelligence and Civil Liability The purpose of the paper is to gather the views of stakeholders and the general pub- lic on its contents.
