However, in line with changes in the global economy, the footprint of the food sector in Nova Scotia has changed markedly over the past 20 years. [...] The report was prepared at the request of the Nova Scotia Commission on Building our New Economy which has a mandate to engage with Nova Scotians on a discussion of how to shape the economic future of the province and build a better economy across all regions in the province. [...] Interviews with food industry executives, researchers and industry analysts were a key input in the overall research process, and in the identification of the competitive strengths of Nova Scotia food producers and processors. [...] The combined effects of a drop in demand from US consumers due to the recession, the appreciation of the Canadian dollar and an increase in the fishing effort have kept prices low, well below their pre-recession peak. [...] The rapid decline in the ground fishery in the early 1990s led to the closure of a number of processing plants, and a shift for others to a reliance on imported products.
