Suicide is a global issue. Countries around the world are affected by suicide, and many are implementing national suicide prevention strategies to curb this issue. The World Health Organization estimates that there are almost 1 million deaths by suicide in the world, per year. Nowhere is this problem as striking and extreme as in certain Aboriginal populations. In Nunavut, the rate of death by suicide among Inuit has increased markedly over the last three decades, and it is currently just over 120 per 100,000 people, 10 times the Canadian suicide rate.
