[...] The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of a strong depreciation of the U. S. dollar on the world prices of food commodities. [...] The effects of the various currency appreciations on the world crude oil price were also included in the analysis, because of the strong link with agricultural markets. [...] Analysis of results For all countries that have posted a currency appreciation, the combination of the local currency appreciation relative to the U. S. dollar and the expression of world commodity prices in U. S. dollars can lead to a decline in the prices for food commodities expressed in the local currency. [...] Brazil strongly contributes to the increase in world prices for most products, given the strength of its currency appreciation and the significance of its trade with the rest of the world.
