[...] We have made progress in Nova Scotia, through the Department of Health Promotion and Protection and many community partners, to improve the health and safety of children and youth. [...] The histogram at the bottom of the chart provides a distribution of the anatomic sites of injuries for those injuries. [...] Children between the ages of 0 and 4 had the greatest proportion of injuries to the brain, the head and neck, and the torso that resulted in an injury hospitalization. [...] Falls also contributed to high incidences of brain, head, and neck injuries for children between the ages of 0 and 4. Twenty-nine per cent of unintentional fall hospitalizations among 0- to 4-year-olds involved brain injuries, and 13 per cent of injury-related hospitalizations involved injuries to the head or neck.
