The purpose of the Indices of Community Well-Being is to provide relevant information regarding the key dimensions of Calgary communities to assist community leaders and service providers in identifying strengths and needs within their own communities. [...] Public health views social welfare in terms of population health, recognizing that health is more than the absence of disease, but a function of the social and economic conditions of the population. [...] This framework provides a holistic view of community that recognizes that the well-being of the individual and the community is defined by the quality of the individual’s social relationships, economic situation, and physical environment. [...] Employment measures are important indicators of the ability of community members to participate in the social and economic life of the community and thereby to feel connected to the community as contributing members. [...] The indicators of personal health selected for this report include the number and rate of hospital in-patients per community and the number and rate of persons with disabilities*.
