[...] The demographic and social transformations that occurred in North America and Europe between the mid–1800s and the end of the 1900s are continuing to take place worldwide. [...] Our criteria for including a policy on the weight of the research evidence were that the findings regarding the policy’s importance to the health and well-being of working families were strong and statistically significant; had been replicated; and were consistent across time, location, and data source. [...] The review included an examination of published research that documented the conditions faced by and the needs of working families, as well as those that investigated the consequences of existing policies and programs (or lack thereof) for the well-being of working families, their children, and their elderly and disabled members.
