Bathing in residential care : Stanford Place bathing study

9 Jan 2012

The study proposed to expand on practice approaches in residential care that influence the highly personal and intimate activity of bathing in older adults. By comparing traditional bathing approaches--Arjo bathtub and en-suite showers with the new mobile shower unit, the study's intent was to provide knowledge that would improve our current level of understanding of the psychosocial, environmental and human factors intimately connected with the care needs of older adults living in residential care and health care providers (namely RCAs) working in this setting. The study investigated approaches to care, such as the scheduled weekly tub bath, and how these do or do not manifest a person-centred model of care. The study provides new knowledge on residential care environments and modifiable factors that can reduce the challenges or press exerted on individuals with a wide range of cognitive abilities during bathing, an intimate activity of everyday life.
