The coastline is a geomorphic feature on the land that represents the landward extent of the influence of the ocean. [...] In areas of barrier islands, lagoons, estuaries and salt marshes where the coastline can be convoluted, the interpretation of the coastline change can be more complicated and the rates may not be representative of the processes involved in the coastline change. [...] In the case of the geomorphic coastline definition, the high water events associated with storms typically cause the most erosion and thus influence the location of the coastline. [...] The determination of the direction of change of the coastline was automated in a GIS as well as the calculation of the shortest distance between two coastlines of different years. [...] In areas of barrier islands, lagoons, estuaries and salt marshes where the coastline can be convoluted and the interpretation of the coastline change can be more complicated and the rates may not be representative of the processes involved in the coastline change.
