The goal of the Rural Communities Impacting Policy (RCIP) Project is to increase the ability of rural communities and organizations in Nova Scotia to access and use social science research in order to influence and develop policy that contributes to the health and sustainability of communities. [...] Awareness at the Municipal Level 4 Executive Summary The 2005 Rural Communities Impacting Policy (RCIP) Coastal Area Management research project explores the experiences of coastal management efforts across the South Shore of Nova Scotia and seeks to increase awareness of the role municipalities can play in the sustainable use and development of coastal areas. [...] The development of the SPI must include the input of all municipalities and needs to be coordinated through the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. [...] Examining the role that Municipalities in Nova Scotia can play in addressing the sustainable use and development of coastal areas in the province reveals a lot of power at the municipal level to comprehensively address coastal management. [...] The remaining 44 per cent have little in place to plan for coastal management.4 The purpose of this research project is to promote and build awareness of the role that Municipal Governments can play in the sustainable use and development of coastal areas in Nova Scotia.
