Navigating the health care system : Health care experience of persons living with HIV/AIDS in Nova Scotia

9 Nov 2009

Appreciation is also extended to the staff of the AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia and the AIDS Coalition of Cape Breton for the support that was given to help organize the focus groups. [...] The specific objectives of the focus groups were: 1) To engage persons living with HIV/AIDS and health professionals caring for them in determining the needs and support requirements of PHAs; 2) To create a “map” of the PHAs journey through the health care system; 3) To identify the gaps and/or barriers to service along the health care continuum. [...] With respect to the health care providers in Cape Breton, the consultant relied on the Executive Director of the ACCB and the HIV Medical Specialist in Sydney to generate a list of primary and hospital/clinic based health care providers who work with PHAs in the area. [...] A consent outlining the purpose and details of the focus group was provided to participants in advance of the focus group with the invitation to contact the consultant should they have any questions (Appendix B). [...] The intent was to create a “map” of the PHAs journey through the health care system and identify the stages of that journey where improvements could be made in terms of support and advocacy.
