For my father, Gordon Clark Dickin, the son and grandson of pioneers LOOKING FOR COUNTRY: A NORWEGIAN IMMIGRANTS ALBERTA MEMOIR INTRODUCTION 5 IntroOUCtion — Janice Dickin n the island of Karmoy, near the town of Skudneshaven, ' in the jurisdiction of Rogaland, in the northern nation of Norway, there lived at the turn of the century a farm- ing-fishing-professional family. [...] Part of the country's econom- ic recovery was accomplished through shipping and, by the end of the nineteenth century, tiny Norway had the third largest merchant navy in the world, after the United Kingdom and the United States. [...] In one documented case, 80 fisherman from Skudneshavn on the island of Karmoy took part in the fisheries on the east coast of the United States in 1904 and then returned home for the next year's winter herring season.9 By the time the Olsens left Norway, family emigration complete with a string of children was no longer the norm.
