- Every day and most nights Margot read and reread her favorite books. 8
- They were all about space travel. 8
- Her mother tried to convince her to read different books about robots or gorillas or princesses. 8
- But she soon gave up. 8
- Margot was only interested in one thing. 9
- Whenever Margot learned a new fact she would share it with everyone she met. 10
- Did you know that the first creatures sent to space were fruit flies she said at dinner. 10
- Thats nice sweetheart said her mother. 11
- Make sure to finish all your dahl and rice. 11
- The first men on the moon were named Neil and Buzz she told her teacher a little louder than usual just to make sure she was heard. 12
- The teacher was unimpressed. 13
- Please pay attention Margot he said. 13
- We are learning arithmetic right now. 13
- During lunch break the children went outside to play. Margot brought her books with her. 14
- Do you want to join us for kickball the other girls asked Margot. 14
- In outer space the astronauts eat special food squeezed out of tubes Margo said holding open her book in case anybody doubted her. 15
- But the girls didnt even look at the page. They had already started dividing up the teams. 15
- Late at night Margot didnt have to think about dinner or math or the schoolyard. 16
- She could read about space until lights out. 16
- And then read even later under the covers shining her blue flashlight on the pages. 16
- Margot fell asleep wishing she never had to talk about anything other than space ever again. 17
- When she woke up Margot went down to the kitchen table where her mother was preparing breakfast. 18
- Good morning Margot said her mother. 18
- Margot had meant to say good morning. 19
- Eat your oatmeal dear said her mother. 20
- Margot tried to ask for a spoon. 21
- It was no use every time she opened her mouth all that came out were transmissions from Neil Armstrongs 1969 mission to the moon 21
- Thats nice sweetheart was all her mother said. Hurry up or youll be late for school. 21
- Margot please answer the question on the board said her teacher. 22
- For once she knew the answer. It was an easy question. 22
- Surely her teacher would realize something was wrong 23
- Instead he said Margot please pay attention. The answer is clearly seven. 23
- Throughout the day Margot grew increasingly frustrated. 24
- The kids on the playground didnt notice anything unusual during recess. 24
- The gym teacher told Margot to pipe down. 25
- The school nurse simply gave her a glass of water then sent her back to class. 25
- By the end of the day Margot felt like crying. She went into her bedroom and slammed the door. 26
- Margot inhaled deeply opened her mouth and let everything gush out 26
- That did it. 28
- Margot grabbed a marker. 28
- She knew she wasnt supposed to write on the walls but she no longer cared. 28
- Writing out her feelings felt good. She kept going. 29
- Every word she scrawled somehow made her feel lighter. 30
- Soon a whole wall filled up. Margot got lost in her writing. She forgot about the rest of the world. 30
- When her mother came into the room Margot didnt even notice. 31
- MARGOT said her mom. What on earth is going on in here 32
- Margot waited for something to happen but instead her mom got very quiet. 33
- She read all the words on the wall and then read them again. 33
- Margot started to clean the walls with the corner of her sleeve. 36
- Her mom rested a hand on her shoulder. I have a better idea. 36
- Together they transformed the wall into a deep galaxy blue. They added a moon and some stars and even a rocket ship. 37
- Margots mom came back from the basement carrying bucketfuls of colorful paint. 37
- On the other wall Margots mom taped two large sheets of paper. 38
- The pièce de résistance she explained. 38
- So you always have a place on the wall to write your thoughts. 38
- Im hungry said Margot. Can we have spaghetti for dinner 39
- Margot wasnt sure exactly when her voice came back but she was glad she had someone there to hear it. 39
