After framing the issue and noting the disproportion in its importance for the two countries, we lo- cate Chinese migration to the Russian Far East in the broader context of Chinese internal and international migration. [...] Some estimates put the number of legal and illegal migrants at 10 to 12 million before the onset of the global economic crisis in 2008, placing Russia second only to the United States in the number of migrants received.
