ELECTRIFICATION AND DEVELOPMENT: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE ON THE EFFECT OF ELECTRICITY PROVISION

Her choice of an instrument for placement of the electricity grid is the gradient of the land in which the community is located. [...] In order to solve for the endogeneity of electrification the author uses the introduction of a new agricultural technology intensive in irrigation (the Green Revolution) and the uneven distribution of groundwater as a natural experiment to develop an instrumental variable. [...] Two years after the beginning of the program, the electrification rate of encouraged households was 19 percentage points higher than that of the rest of the sam- ple. [...] A possible reason for the lack of an effect in some of these studies may be the quality of the power supply. [...] In order to investigate the long term effects of electrification we need to focus on the outcomes of connecting the grid in developed countries.
