The mission of The George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation is to enhance the effect iveness of people and organizations working together to help Canadians imagine and build a just, healthy, and creative society. [...] This report documents how the Metcalf Foundation has been working to protect and strengthen that mesh.  While designed as standalone programs, the Foundation’s three areas of focus, the environment, inclusive local economies, and the performing arts, are grounded in shared values and guided by a common goal to help Canadians imagine and build a just, healthy, and creative society. [...] On the ground, the initiative supports Indigenous-led conservation in two regions with unique climate and biodiversity values: the Hudson Bay and James Bay Lowlands and the Mackenzie River Basin. [...] By the end of 2019, four organizations — the National Ballet of Canada, Tapestry Opera, The Theatre Centre, and Theatre Direct — worked with cross-departmental teams to examine the significance and openness of legacy art forms for today’s audiences, to reposition the role and agency of young people in the creative process, and to prioritize generosity across all segments of an organization’s const. [...] The purpose of the series is to highlight the current state of the field, animate some of the pressing questions it is facing, and illuminate the impacts and the benefits that flow from arts and culture.
