In the wake of the failure of the League of Nations to prevent World War II realism became dominant in the field of IR, but the subfield of International Organization continued to develop. [...] They tried to combine the realist recognition of the enduring importance of the state with the liberal internationalist belief in the possibility of institutionalized international cooperation, for instance by examining the relevance of shared norms or convergent interests among states. [...] By the end of the course students should expect to be familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the major theoretical approaches that are useful in understanding global governance and to articulate these in verbal and written form.
