[...] With the support of researchers at the University of Waterloo and members of the SPNO, the Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area, the Social Planning Council of Kingston and District, the Social Planning Council of York Region, and the Social Planning Council Oxford collected the lived experience data on the current state of affordable rental housing in their respective communities. [...] These themes capture the process of displacement itself, the role of landlords in the displacement process, and the short- and long-term effects that displacement has on those who experience it. [...] 2.3 Rent control, affordable housing, and the current state of the market Policy also plays a significant role in the loss of affordable housing and the displacement of tenants in Ontario. [...] Central to this is the erosion of rent control—a set of policies enacted at the provincial level to limit the amount that a landlord can increase the rent of their units and to restrict how often the rent can be increased (Vermes, 2023).
