The development of China's forestry sector and its implications for Canada

The research proposed here will look at the impacts of China's major forestry reforms, including aggressive reforestation and plantation programs, forestland tenure reforms, the government's efforts to encourage forest investment, taxation, financial compensation, and trading mechanisms, and will link these developments to the opportunities and threats they pose to the Canadian forest industry. [...] For the first time since the establishment of the PRC, desertification has been reversed, from an annual increase of 3436 km2 at the end of the 20th century, to the current annual reduction of 1283 km2. [...] Various programs have focused on creating a unified marketing approach for Canadian wood, promoting the use of Canadian wood through trade shows, seminars and home building demonstrations, and technical support in the areas of product testing, market acceptance and product accreditation, and in the development of foreign building codes and standards. [...] Part V. Implications for Canadian foreign policy In order to compete effectively in the international arena, the advantages held by the Canadian forest products sector should be maximized and the disadvantages minimized. [...] It has achieved many of its goals, such as the successful development of the Dream Home Canada (DHC) to promote the benefits of wood frame construction housing, the BC Olympics Pavilion, and the promotion of Canadian wood technology and products as building materials.
