The current state of historical societies in Canada [English version] A collaborative approach The idea of launching a conversation between historical societies in Canada as part of the centenary of the Canadian Historical Association was initiated by the Agents mémoriels research project (for more details on the project, see the boxed text at the end of the introduction). [...] The aim of the meeting was to consider how best to establish a dialogue between the “professionals” of history and the actors of citizen history, by promoting a conversation between provincial and territorial historical societies or federations and the CHA on common issues. [...] In the letter of invitation, they emphasized the importance of the initiative: As part of the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Historical Association (CHA), the CHA and the Fédération Histoire Québec (FHQ) intend to take this opportunity to open a conversation about our shared contribution to historical knowledge. [...] The objective was to organize the first webinar on the role, practices and challenges of historical societies in the production of new historical knowledge and in educating Canadians about the past. [...] The main objectives of historical societies are to bridge the gap between them and the general public, to highlight the importance of the past in our present, through the publication of historical works, the awarding of prizes, the creation of forums for historical exchange and history education.
