In Chap- ter I, I survey the historical beginnings of the cult of the Persian in the East, and its development in Rome and Italy particularly within the context of the religious controversies of the seventh and eighth centuries. [...] The early development of the cult of Anastasius within the monastic communities engaged in the orthodox resistance against the heresy of monotheletism, which will be further explored in the following chapter, helps to explain the early link forged between the veneration of his relics and the defense of orthodoxy. [...] Since the Arabs' conquest of Palestine and Jerusalem was accomplished in stages, a hasty flight by the Jerusalem monks who would have grabbed only what they could easily carry is not convincing.35 On the other hand, the decapitation of Anastasius by his executioners facilitated the exaltation of the relic of the head over the rest of the saint's body, a common practice in the Middle Ages.36 At the
