The letters addressed by Theoleptos to Eirene-Eulogia during the years 1307 till his death at the end of 1322 provide many details regarding the complex personality of this Byzantine princess prior to her involvement with the anti-Palamite cause and the less sympathetic opinions of her held by the members of the opposing camp. [...] The same monk then began to instruct him in the ways of asceticism, contemplation and vigilance of the mind.11 On 16 January 1275 the Union of the Churches established at the Council Lyon in the previous year was solemnly proclaimed in Constantinople.12 Theoleptos together with the monks in the vicinity of Nikaia were apparently vocal in their opposition to the unionist policy of Michael vin Palai [...] The Tomos was signed and the Council of Blachernai was brought to a close.33 In the Tomos Gregorios of Cyprus had expounded the theology of the procession of the Holy Spirit in a form that departed from the traditional stock arguments. [...] The historian Pachymeres described in some detail the severe hardships endured by the people of the city especially as their food supplies dwindled.48 Choumnos naturally gave prominence to the role played by Theoleptos, but Pachymeres passed over him in silence and attributed the lifting of the siege to the arrival of the Catalan Company.49 A Catalan chronicle gives the following account. [...] However, since the period of contact was brief and at such a young age, the direct influence of Theoleptos on the spiritual and theological formation of Palamas must have been negligible.53 E. THE ARSENITE SCHISM The problem of the Arsenite schism dates back to the time when Michael vm blinded loannes Laskaris, the legitimate heir to the throne, and assumed the supreme power himself.
