Two copies of thé source hâve been published: thé "older rédaction" known as thé Sinodal'nyy spisok, and thé "younger rédac- tion" referred to as thé Komissionnyy spisok.6 The "older rédaction" was compiled in thé fourteenth century, probably at thé court of thé arch- bishop. [...] Another source is thé Paterik from thé Caves Monastery of Kiev which was compiled during thé first third of thé thirteenth century.16 It comprises, in thé main, letters written to each other by Bishop Simeon of Vladimir in Suzdalia, and thé monk Polycarp from thé monastery. [...] In this way he established not only thé identifies but also thé baptismal and monastic names of many princes.21 His work was of spécial importance in helping us to détermine thé identities of princes for thé eleventh and thé first half of thé twelfth century. [...] Gleb and Boris, thé Church of St Elias, and thé adjacent caves in Chernigov; thé Cathedral of St Sofia, thé Caves Monastery, thé Church of St Cyril, and others in Kiev. [...] Their authors made no serious attempt to analyze thé nature of Svyatoslavichi policies as a whole or thé nature of thé family's political structure.1 During thé second half of thé nineteenth and thé beginning of thé twentieth century, a number of monographs appeared devoted to thé ex- amination of individual principalities.
