Destiny By Design : The Construction of the Panama Canal

2000

Destiny By Design is a photo essay and narrative that pays tribute to the Panama Canal, one of the great engineering accomplishments of the twentieth century. The book features more than 160 never-before-published photographs by author Jeremy Sherman Snapp, Gerald Fitzgerald Sherman and Jeremy Sherman Snapp. Gerald Sherman was a photographer/engineer who was granted extensive access to the construction sites. Photos show how the canal was constructed, and there are also modern images of historic Canal Zone sites. These photos represent both a sense of closure to the "American century" on the isthmus and the dawning of a new era for the Panamanian people. The Panama Canal remains the most significant of all human-made waterways in the evolution of the Americas.
